After much contentious debate in a controversially appointed Constituent Assembly, an ultimately rushed draft of a new, short-lived, post-revolution constitution was approved in a public referendum and took effect on December 25, 2012.

March 30, 2011, Constitutional Declaration

Soon after the January 25, 2011, revolution, a public referendum was held on proposed amendments to the 1971 constitution. Following that referendum, the then-ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) issued a "Constitutional Declaration" that incorporated some provisions approved in the referendum, modified others, and added some not included in the referendum. Later, some supplemental declarations were issued.
